Silverton
Located on Hwy 6, three miles (5 km.) south of New Denver, Silverton is on the North Kootenay Lake – Silvery Slocan Super Side Trip of the International Selkirk Loop. Silverton is of one of British Columbia ’s smallest municipalities. Like most other Slocan Valley towns, Silverton started as a silver mining community in the early 1890’s. Many old buildings survive and are still use, and the village has done a great job of restoring and beautifying its buildings.
You can’t miss noticing the Silverton Gallery and Mining Museum right in town on Highway 6, as the Museum is surrounded by original mining equipment salvaged from the mines. Local artists display inside the Silverton Gallery, which was originally a schoolhouse. Theatre productions take place there on a regular basis.
Campers enjoy the 15 site lakeside campground. The Day Park is perfect for a picnic of delectables picked up from a number of cafes, restaurants and a grocery in town. Dewis Park has an adventure playground, a tennis court and ball field, picnic tables, water taps and washrooms.
A surprising number of crafts stores, galleries, and accommodations are in Silverton. Quiet, clean and eclectic, Silverton is a great place in which to take a break from driving. If you are in the Silverton area on Sunday’s during the summer months, stop by their farmers market located along Hwy 6 next to the Silverton Country Inn.
