The town of Chewelah was named after the native word that means small white snake or water snake, for the winding patterns of the rivers that flowed through the Chewelah Valley. With its moderate climate, dry land and irrigated farming, ranching and dairy farming continue to be mainstays. Chewelah’s diversified economy includes a ski hill and other industries that are prospering and keeping the town viable.
