Considering a side trip? Riondel, one of the Kootenays’ best kept secrets, lies just 15 minutes north of the Kootenay Bay ferry landing (6 mi/10km off Highway 3A).
Camping –
Riondel Park & Campground has 39 sites nestled in the woods along the lakeshore. No hook-ups, flush toilets with showers available as of 2012. There are some spots for a large RV, but all are ideal for tenting and smaller units. The campground is open Mid-May to October (closing is weather dependent. Reservations can be made after opening: 250-225-3338 or [email protected]
If you’re looking for more luxury, you can book space in a local B&B – Waters Edge or Shadow Mountain.
Golf –
The community boasts a picturesque 9-hole course called the Riondel Golf Course
Community –
Once a prosperous mining camp, with a chequered history of claim jumping & murder, it retains the look & community spirit of the 1950s & 60s. Since closure of the Bluebell, Riondel has drawn newcomers to its outdoor opportunities – boating, fishing, swimming, hiking – its relaxed friendly atmosphere, and the 360 degree vistas of Kootenay grandeur. We are always willing to share our Library, our beach, our gardens, and our sense of peace.
Refresh yourself at Bob’s Bar and Grill, or buy some freshly baked bread & fixings from Riondel Market for a lakeside picnic and swim at Riondel Park & Campground.
You won’t be sorry you went out of your way.
